DETECT at the GHOR Congress
Last week, DETECT was present at the first GHOR congres. The GHOR is responsible for medical care during big accidents, disasters and crises. At the GHOR congres, professionals in emergency medical care were present. We talked with medical experts from the ambulance, dispatch center and citizen responders. Without these people, increasing survival of cardiac arrest with automated cardiac arrest detection will not be possible. It was very interesting to hear about their thoughts on our project!

World Restart a Heart Day 2025
On October 16, it was World Restart a Heart Day. At the main entrance of Radboudumc, we represented the DETECT project by highlighting the importance of rapid bystander resuscitation. After all, the sooner you start, the greater the chance of survival in the event of a cardiac arrest. With the help of a VR headset, visitors were able to experience for themselves what it is like to perform CPR. It was an impressive and educational experience! In addition, we shared information about the DETECT study, in which we investigate how technology can help to detect cardiac arrest more quickly and initiate resuscitation sooner.

A study in an amusement park!
Recently, we tested our cardiac arrest detection wristband in an amusement park. The goal was to investigate whether the wristband would generate false alarms in situations that are not cardiac arrests. Roller coasters and other intense rides cause sudden changes in heart rate and a lot of movement—perfect conditions to put the wristband to the test under extreme circumstances. This is important, because in the future, a single false alarm could mean that an ambulance and volunteer first responders are dispatched unnecessarily. With these measurements, we are making the system smarter and more reliable, so that it can truly save lives in emergency situations. The data from the amusement park have now been passed on to our researchers, and we are very eager to see the results.

Research during the Nijmegen 4Days Marches
This week, 25 walkers are wearing a wristband for the DETECT study during the Nijmegen Four Days Marches. With this research, we aim to further improve our algorithm for automatic cardiac arrest detection.
By collecting data during prolonged physical activity, we are making the algorithm more robust, enabling it to better recognise real cardiac arrests in the future and reduce false positives.
Wishing all walkers the best of luck and lots of enjoyment!

Science Prize
The Working Group on Cardiology Netherlands (WCN) annually awards the Science Prize (1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes) to recognize and encourage the work of young researchers. In 2024, researcher Roos Edgar won the second prize with the publication "Automated cardiac arrest detection using a photoplethysmography wristband: algorithm development and validation in patients with induced circulatory arrest in the DETECT-1 study" in The Lancet Digital Health.

DETECT during the marathon
We are testing our wristband with cardiac arrest detection under different conditions, including the marathon! A group of runners will wear the CardioWatch wristband during the marathon. Afterwards, we will look at the data. We wish the runners good luck!
